Gambling harms is an emerging public health issue and has been identified as a priority in Glasgow and also at a national level. Public Health Scotland worked with partners in Glasgow to pilot a whole-system approach to mitigate the impact of gambling harm in a local authority area. This work contributed to the prevention, early intervention and education around gambling harms and their impact in Glasgow. It has contributed to the implementation of the Glasgow City Health Improvement Strategy and led to the development of the Glasgow City Gambling Harms Action Plan, which is implemented by a multi-agency group, chaired by Glasgow City Council.
Recognising the vital inclusion of the lived experience voice in all of our work, What’s at Stake has been developed to highlight the harms experienced by different, vulnerable groups. These stories will be used to raise awareness throughout our communities of the harm from gambling and address stigma which prevents many from seeking help. The Scotland Reducing Gambling Harms Lived Experience Forum, hosted by the ALLIANCE and key partners with a role in developing work and supporting those affected by gambling harms in Glasgow, were consulted for their views in the development of this project. The stories represented in this project have been told by people living in Glasgow City who have experienced direct or indirect harms from gambling.
What’s at Stake is a creative arts project facilitated by Recollective and commissioned by Glasgow City HSCP and Public Health Scotland to co-create a collection of fully anonymised composite stories that reflect the realities and experiences of gambling exposure, participation, risks, and harms for people in Glasgow. These stories reflect individual experiences and have been told from different perspectives and do not represent the experiences of all people or communities impacted by gambling harms in Glasgow.

The artists of Recollective use photography, film, illustration and creative writing to produce thought-provoking, high-quality art about real lives. Borrowing techniques from ethnography, oral history and social documentary and mixing these with each artist’s expertise, our projects are complex, multilayered, accessible, socially engaged, and unique.
As a collective, they have created the sell-out Barrowland Ballads, about Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom, and Nothing is Lost, a Commonwealth Games legacy project which won the Scottish Design Award Grand Prix. As individuals, they have documented a wide variety of Glasgow’s people and places including the Red Road Flats, Easterhouse, Paddy’s Market, Govan’s cranes and a Showman’s yard in Parkhead.
